Children growing up in poverty in Barbour County, West Virginia don't get many chances to go on excursions outside of the county to see new sights and realize new experiences. The KidREACH program provides enrichment four field trips a year for 150 struggling elementary students. The field trips provide needed exploration for students outside of their normal environment and provide experiences they normally would never have. During the spring, April and May, four KidREACH sites: Junior, Philippi, Belington, and Mt. Vernon - went on field trips to science centers and zoos.
On April 22, 2013, Junior KidREACH took a field trip to Oglebay Zoo in Wheeling, WV. Approximately 34 students and their parents attended the field trip. The students visited the pretend vet exhibit where they "worked" on animals, the rare red pand exhibit, and the train exhibit.
On April 27, 2013, the Philippi KidREACH program took a field trip to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Approximately 25 students and some of their parents attended. The students visited the Robo-world Center, took a tour of a submarine, watched an IMAX film about the Hubble Telescope, and visited the Miniature Railroad and Village Center.
On May 18, 2013, the Belington KidREACH took a field trip to the Carnegie Science Center as well with 21 students and some parents. They participated in the same actitivities as the Philippi students, but watched an IMAX movie on the Artic, and visited the sports center.
On May 30, 2013, the Mount Vernon KidREACH program took a field trip to the Pittsburg Zoo. Approximately 30 KidREACH students and their parents attended. They went to different animal exhibits, the aquarium, walk-through shark tank, various shows, and a petting area with a camel, llamas, deer, and goats.
The participating KidREACH elementary students really enjoyed the fields trips and were introduced to experiences that they would not normally get to have because of their families' struggles with poverty and remoteness.
