Volunteer providing shoes for children of Gioto
This report features the Gioto dump. Situated about two kilometers from the city center, the Gioto dump, in juxtapostion to its ugliness, has a beautiful view of Lake Nakuru. Though Expanding Opportunities does not have a specific project for the Gioto Dump Site, we collaborate with and purchase artwork through those organizations who do. One of Expanding Opportunities' volunteers, brought over 50 pairs of shoes to the dump site for distribution. Some of the street children in Nakuru make the dump their home. It is a harsh reality for children growing up in such an environment.
As pictures speak louder than words, please watch the slide show.

Philip

Philip
Expanding Opportunities' Beverly Stone and two volunteers, Mike and Liz went into town on Thursday October 31. It wasn't long before a little boy dressed in some rather smelly clothes popped out from behind a truck with his hand out. He was holding a bottle of the infamous glue that street children sniff to remain high, not quite so hungry and rather warm. This little fellow's name was Philip. He was wearing two very dirty, and torn jackets. It is rather cold at night and very warm during the day. He keeps the jackets on so he doesn't lose them for the evening cold sleep on the sidewalk.
We took him to a local restaurant collecting another boy along the way. in exchange for the bottle of glue, we purchase something for them to eat. While they had their tea and mandazi, we asked questions. The boy's name is Philip. He had walked to town about two months ago after his mother beat him for stealing a shlling.
This is not unusual. Each of the hundreds of children living on the streets has his or her own story to tell. Often these children have forgotten to tell a 100% truthful story, but Expanding Opportunities intends to follow up on everything he told us and find the best way to help him.

Meet Joshua

Joshua
Joshua Ndugu has been with us for several years. He is now over 18 and is in Class 8. He missed a great deal of school before coming to us. He struggles as a student due to the lack of a solid foundation when young. He is a hard worker and very responsible. Rather quiet, he is always ready to lend a hand. Turn around and he will be there and say "Let me help you with that. ".
He is in love with automobiles and hopes we will be able to help him get his driver's license and mechanics school.
He is in his last year of primary school and takes the KCPE examination in November.
Early in the year, a wonderful donor came along and assisted him to get his school fees paid, and renew the parts of his uniform that were no longer useable. He does not have a regular sponsor.
He has three months more of primary school then take his examination in November. He is hoping to take a driver education class in December and an automotive mechanics apprenticeship or a course in January . It will cost approximately $1,000.00 to take Joshua from where he is now to independence and employment. Two donors giving a recurring donation s of $31.00 per month will be matched by an anonymous donor and Joshua will be independent, employed and grateful. Thank you for considering this wonderful opportunity.
