AIDS is claiming the lives of so many parents in Kenya. 1 in 10 children are being orphaned because of it. Through Micro-Finance programs tailored specifically to help financially position families willing to foster an orphaned child, we hope to address two problems with one solution: elevate families above the poverty line and see orphaned children continue to experience the love and care of a family. We'll directly benefit 150 families and 150 orphans through this expansion project.
The sad fact is that one in every 10 Kenyan children will be orphaned because of Aids. With the majority of rural Kenyan families already struggling with poverty, life for a newly orphaned child is extremely difficult. We want to see these children taken in by families. Many families are willing to foster, but few area able to afford the increased costs.
Micro-finance is a way to create a self-sustainable solution. Our Kenya Foster Family Loans Program helps qualifying foster families take out loans of around US$200. Loans are repaid anywhere between 3 and 8 months depending on the investment made, with the family enjoying increased income in addition. On average, we are finding that after 3 loan borrowing and repayment cycles, a family is cash positive after adding the costs of an additional child to the family.
329 foster families have already been helped by this program benefiting in excess of 330 orphaned children. These children now have a family and are going to school. Women are trained to run a successful small business in order to provide for their growing family. The capacity exists to grow this program with 150 new families each year but we need your help to do this. US$2,000 allows loan capital for another 10 families into this program. Your gift will keep on giving.
