6TH BENEFICIARY OF THE COMMUNITY HOUSING PROGRAMME

By Nicholas Arwa | Project Leader

The finishing works on the sixth house under the Community Housing Programme are currently underway in Got Matar Village, East Yimbo Location.

The beneficiary, Mrs. Elizabeth, is a 57-year-old widow and mother of three children: Vivian, Isaiah, and Marthur, all of whom were unable to complete their basic education due to severe financial challenges.

Elizabeth's life took a difficult turn in 2018 when her husband, the late William, a mechanic by profession, succumbed to HIV/AIDS. The family was further devastated by the loss of their first-born daughter, who left behind four young children now under Elizabeth's care. Since these tragedies, Elizabeth has struggled to support her family and grandchildren through small-scale subsistence farming around her homestead.

Before his passing, her husband had begun constructing a mud house. However, the house remained incomplete, with no plastering or finishing works undertaken. Over the years, continuous exposure to heavy rains severely eroded the walls, leaving the structure weak, unsafe, and at constant risk of collapse. Elizabeth lived in fear for her own safety and that of the grandchildren under her care.

Recognizing the urgent need for decent and secure housing, the Got Matar Community Development Group (GMCDG) identified and selected Elizabeth as the sixth beneficiary of the Community Housing Programme.

This house marks the sixth home being renovated and upgraded by students and staff from the Got Matar Institute of Technology (IoT) under a three-year initiative aimed at improving 30 homes for vulnerable rural families. The programme not only restores dignity and safety to disadvantaged households but also provides practical training opportunities for students, enabling them to apply their technical skills while serving the community.

Through the generous support of our donors and partners, families like Elizabeth's are receiving renewed hope, improved living conditions, and an opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity.
