5TH COMMUNITY HOUSING PROGRAMME BENEFICIARY.

By Nicholas Arwa | Project Leader

The finishing works of the Community Housing Programme (5th House) are currently underway in East Yimbo Location, Chunga Village.

The beneficiary, Jecinter Atieno, is a 44-year-old widow of the late Willis Osino and a mother of three children: Jackline Akoth (a Form Four leaver), Charles Ochieng (a Form One dropout), and John Elvis (a Grade Five pupil at Chunga Primary School).

Jecinter fell into deep poverty after her husband, a mason by profession, succumbed to HIV/AIDS in 2021, leaving her also infected.Since his death, she has struggled to provide for her family through small-scale subsistence farming and charcoal burning.

Before his passing, her husband had constructed a mud house but did not complete the plastering. Over time, heavy rains eroded the walls, leaving the house structurally weakened and at constant risk of collapse. Jecinter expressed great concern about the safety of her home and her children.

It was this urgent need that led Got Matar Community Development Group (GMCDG) to identify and select her as the fifth beneficiary of the Community Housing Programme.

This marks the fifth house being upgraded by students and staff from the Institute of Technology (IoT), following the launch of a three-year initiative aimed at renovating 30 houses for deserving rural families.
