The Silent Classrooms and the Weight of Hunger

As we walk through quiet school courtyards this January, there is a profound sense of anticipation in the air. While the classrooms are currently silent for the holiday season, the mission of SSGID has grown more ambitious than ever. We have expanded our vision to ensure that hunger never stands in the way of an education.

For a young girl, the barrier to a classroom seat isn't just the cost of books or uniforms it is often the persistent ache of an empty stomach. It is nearly impossible to focus on a math equation or a history lesson when your last meal was twenty-four hours ago. In many households, parents are forced to make an impossible choice: send their daughter to school hungry, or keep her home to help find the next meal.

A Story of 1,000 Dreams

Imagine a bright 12-year-old girl. Last term, her seat at the back of the classroom was often empty. When she did attend, her head often rested on her desk not out of boredom, but out of exhaustion. Her mother shared with us that without a guaranteed meal at school, the walk was too long and the day was too taxing.

Now, imagine the impact when that one girl becomes one thousand.

Because of your generosity, we are preparing to support 1,000 girls who will learn that, starting in February, a warm, nutritious meal will be waiting for them every single day. This transformation ripples through entire communities. The "choice" between food and education disappears. These girls aren't just students anymore; they are children who are seen, fed, and supported. For them, a school meal is the bridge between a life of hardship and a life of opportunity.

February: Scaling Up for Action

As schools prepare to reopen their doors in February, the SSGID team is working at a massive scale to ensure we are ready to serve:

• Expanding the Supply Chain: We are scaling our logistics to provide fresh, healthy ingredients for 1,000 daily plates, sourcing locally to support the regional economy.
• Readying the Kitchens: We are upgrading serving areas and training staff to handle the increased volume while maintaining the highest standards of hygiene.
• Community Outreach: We are working with local leaders to identify and enroll the 1,000 girls most at risk of dropping out due to food insecurity.

While the students are currently enjoying their holiday, this is the most critical time for our project. Moving from supporting 100 girls to 1,000 girls is a massive undertaking that requires a community of dedicated supporters.

A Story of Ten Girls – Learning Without Hunger
In the early morning sun of Juba City, ten schoolgirls sit together in a neat row, their faces bright with anticipation. Not long ago, their mornings were different; many skipped breakfast, some stayed home to do chores, and others walked to school on empty stomachs, unable to focus on their lessons. Today, thanks to the generosity of individual donors through the GlobalGiving platform, each girl begins her school day with a hot bowl of sorghum porridge enriched with peanuts and vegetables grown in the community garden. Their giggles and chatter fill the air as they enjoy the meal that keeps them energized for class.

Activities and Progress
Since the start of the project, SSGID has been providing daily school meals to ten girls at Gumbo 1Primary  School. Local mothers and grandmothers volunteer to cook, using fresh produce grown nearby. Teachers have reported an impressive rise in attendance; nearly every one of the ten girls now attends school regularly, and they notice better concentration and participation during lessons. Parents have joined monthly forums to learn about nutrition and the importance of supporting their daughters’ education, creating a strong link between school and home.

Community Involvement and Impact
Behind every meal is a team effort: fathers supply firewood, mothers rotate cooking duties, and school committees ensure that food is fairly distributed and no girl is left behind. These ten girls are now thriving and alert in class, performing better in reading and arithmetic, and boldly sharing their dreams of becoming teachers, nurses, and engineers. What began as a simple meal has become a movement of hope and determination within the community.

Looking Ahead
The transformation of these ten girls is inspiring other families to enroll their daughters in school. With continued support from individual donors through GlobalGiving, SSGID aims to scale up this initiative to reach 1000 girls in Juba City, ensuring that more children stay in class, learn with dignity, and look forward to a future filled with opportunities.
