From One School Visit to a Future Where No Girl Misses School Because of Her Period.
On 21 September 2026, Commit2Empower visited Ngong Township Primary School in Ngong, Kajiado County, Kenya, to distribute sanitary pads to schoolgirls. The visit was a practical expression of our commitment to addressing menstrual hygiene needs and supporting girls to continue their education with dignity.
The photographs from the visit capture the distribution of sanitary pads and the involvement of the Pads4School team in making these essential supplies available to schoolgirls. Behind this activity is a much bigger concern: no girl should have to worry about how she will manage her period while at school and no girl should have to face unnecessary barriers to learning because she lacks access to menstrual hygiene products.
Why This Work Matters
Menstruation is a normal part of life, yet managing it can become a challenge for girls who cannot reliably access sanitary pads and other essential menstrual hygiene supplies. For a schoolgirl, this can mean anxiety about staining her uniform, discomfort during lessons, difficulty concentrating or concern about how she will manage her period throughout the school day.
Access to sanitary pads is therefore about more than providing a product. It is about dignity, confidence, participation and creating conditions in which girls can focus on their education.
Menstrual health is also connected to wider conversations about gender equality and educational opportunity. Girls deserve to participate in school without being disadvantaged by a basic health need. Addressing this issue requires practical support, sustained commitment and greater recognition of menstrual health as an important part of keeping girls in education.
What the Visit Represented
Our visit to Ngong Township Primary School demonstrated the practical nature of our approach. The activity centred on getting sanitary pads to schoolgirls who need them, rather than treating menstrual health as an issue that can be addressed through awareness alone.
We recognise that access to menstrual hygiene products must be consistent. A girl who receives sanitary pads during one distribution may still need them in subsequent months. This is why our work must extend beyond individual visits towards a more reliable and sustainable approach to menstrual hygiene support.
The visit also forms part of our effort to build relationships with schools and make menstrual health needs more visible. Schools are important environments for reaching girls, understanding their needs and working towards practical responses that support their continued participation in education.
The Scale We Envision: Keeping 300 Kenyan Girls in School Every Month
Our project, Keep 300 Kenyan Girls in School Every Month, reflects an ambition that goes beyond a single school or distribution exercise. We envision a programme that can provide consistent menstrual hygiene support to 300 girls every month.
This means working towards a more dependable supply of sanitary pads, building relationships with schools, understanding the needs of the girls we serve and mobilising the resources required to sustain the programme. It also means recognising that monthly support requires planning and follow-through, not just one-off donations.
Our ambition is to build a programme that can demonstrate what consistent menstrual hygiene support looks like in practice. We want to reach girls who need assistance, support their dignity and participation in school and develop an approach that can be strengthened over time.
Reaching 300 girls every month would require reliable funding, careful budgeting, coordination with schools and regular monitoring of how supplies are distributed. It would also allow Commit2Empower to plan more effectively, understand the cost of meeting girls' needs and provide donors with clearer information about the results of their support.
We see this target as a foundation on which to build. As our resources, partnerships and operational capacity grow, we envision extending our reach to more schools and communities that need menstrual hygiene support. Any expansion must be guided by the resources available, the needs identified and our ability to maintain reliable support for the girls already reached.
From Providing Pads to Supporting Educational Opportunity
At Commit2Empower, we believe that menstrual health should be recognised as part of the wider effort to support girls' education. Providing sanitary pads addresses an immediate and practical need, but the broader ambition is to help create school environments where girls can manage menstruation with dignity and continue learning with confidence.
Our work contributes to a wider vision in which girls are not left to manage this challenge alone. By making menstrual hygiene supplies more accessible, working with schools and building sustained support for the programme, we aim to help reduce one of the barriers that can affect girls' participation in education.
We also recognise the importance of accountability. As the project develops, we want to document the schools reached, the number of girls supported, the supplies distributed and the resources required to maintain the programme. This information will help us understand our progress, improve implementation and communicate honestly with the people who make this work possible.
Looking Ahead
The distribution at Ngong Township Primary School on 21 September 2026 is part of the work Commit2Empower is undertaking towards a larger goal. We want to move from individual distributions towards consistent monthly support, with the ambition of reaching 300 Kenyan girls every month.
Achieving this vision will require sustained resources, strong school relationships and continued commitment. It will also require people and organisations who recognise that menstrual health matters to girls' dignity and educational opportunity.
Our long-term vision is to grow a programme that can reach more girls, support schools more consistently and demonstrate the value of investing in menstrual hygiene as part of girls' education.
Every distribution is an opportunity to address an immediate need. Our larger task is to build the systems and support needed to ensure that girls can access menstrual hygiene products month after month. That is the scale of change Commit2Empower is working towards.
