When Skylee, a 2-year-old Shih Tzu, came to Second Chance, no one expected what we would find.
She had been acting like her normal, happy self, with no history of getting into things she shouldn’t. But when her family noticed her abdomen was distended, they knew something was wrong.
An x-ray revealed a serious blockage that needed immediate attention. During surgery, our veterinary team discovered the cause of Skylee’s discomfort: a surprising number of hair ties lodged in her stomach. What seemed like a harmless household item had quickly become a serious and potentially life-threatening emergency.
Thanks to timely intervention and skilled care, the foreign objects were safely removed, giving Skylee the chance to recover and return to her normal routine. Skylee’s story is an important reminder that emergencies can happen suddenly, even to pets who appear healthy and have no known habits of swallowing objects.
Access to prompt veterinary care makes all the difference in moments like these. Thanks to supporters like you, Second Chance is able to be there when pets need us most, providing lifesaving care and helping families keep their beloved companions safe and together.
