An Update from Shauri Yako Youth Support Centre

By Joe Mwai | Chair of the Board

Hi Everyone,

As another quarter comes to pass, here's a quick update from the informal settlements in Nyeri Town, Kenya.  We operate thanks to your support, so want to take a moment to let you know how your help matters here on the ground.

What's New:

  • In October 2017, we started the SYSC Informal School initiative. A lot of children in these slums are squeezed out of formal education system, and we want to fill that gap.  The program operates three days a week and provides free elementary school curriculum. SYSC has hired one teacher and is supported by one volunteer teacher.
  • The political tension surrounding the general election has subsided and the opposition and the governing parties have agreed to dialogue and work together to heal the country. This should help the economy recover and make it easier to secure funding and partnership for our programs.

On-going Program Highlights:

  • Masonry: Right now 8 youth are receiving 6-month masonry skills training, thanks to you and our partnership with Options for Homes Kenya. Masonry skills remain in serious demand here.
  • Reproductive Health: Over the last quarter we've been continuing to provide reproductive health education in collaboration with Family Health Options, Nyeri, to empower youth to look after their wellbeing.
  • Scouts: We recruited and trained 22 youth as scouts, providing leadership and life skills. 10 youth from our scouts program secured jobs in the armed forces.

Our Strategic Prioritites

  • Job skills training and reproductive health education will remaining our focus areas for the next 5 years.
  • We continue to look for ways to diversify our funding to so that we can keep our programs going. SYSC relies on volunteer human resources to deliver our programs so that we can maximize the impact of the funds you give to support our programming.

As always, we'd be thrilled for your support as a volunteer or if you have a little extra you can give toward of programming for youth.

Thank you again for your continued kindness to the future of our youth.

Truly yours,
