Spring Update: Job Skills for Youth (Take Two!)

By Joe Mwai | Chair

Dear Friends,

*** OUR APOLOGIES IF YOU ARE RECEIVING THIS UPDATE IN DUPLICATION. WE ORIGINALLY POSTED IT TO ONE OFOUR COMPLETED GLOBAL GIVING PROJECTS ***

Thank you very much for your continuous support of our project:  Livelihood and Life Skills for Kenyan Youth.  This report reflects the period from January to March 2023.  As you know, the purpose of this project is to provide underprivileged youth with a market-relevant jobs and life skills and to assist them to enter into the employment market.

In January 2023, we recruited 10 new trainees for 6-month training: 5 in masonry, 3 in welding, and 2 in tile- fitting.  We are happy to report that training is going well.

We are also thrilled to update you about the 18 youths who participated in our training in 2022 in the areas of welding, masonry, and plumbing, thanks to your support. In January, they completed their trades examination and received their trades' certificate from the National Construction Authority. We have helped all of them to find employment through our industry partner, Options for Homes Kenya.

We believe that, with your continued support and with the help of our industry partners, we will be able to train and put into jobs the same number of youth or more this year. I want to express our profound gratitude to everyone who donates to this project.

Job skills training

During this quarter, our project received $442.95 from generous GlobalGiving donations. We will utilize these funds to support the costs of training equipment, materials, and our trainers' salaries. Part of the money will also go towards tailoring teachers’ salaries, our Scouts group, and our life skills program activities.

"I feel very grateful that in a period of 8 months, I am now a certified mason and have a job. Having job skills is the key to a better life. I truly feel empowered and I want to give back, by training as many youth as I can. I want to reach out and share your blessing with others. I would like the support you have given me to reach as many people as possible.”  - David, masonry program, 2022 -

Life skills training:

Scouts and life skills training program helps to promote positive social and mental health of young persons and plays an important role in strengthening coping strategies, developing self-confidence, and developing decision-making skills.  This aspect of our programming also teaches health and hygiene practices.

Thank you very much, Asante sana. Your support for our youth skills project has never been more important, and we truly do appreciate it.

With a lot of gratitude,

Joe Mwai

Chair
