Introduction

The Jasiri Teen Girls Bootcamp was launched with the vision of equipping 150 girls from rural Nyamira County with leadership and 21st-century skills to address the challenges of high school dropout rates, early marriages, and female genital mutilation (FGM). Despite financial constraints, we remain committed to empowering young girls through interactive workshops, mentorship, and sustainable programs such as the Jasiri clubs.

Achievements

In the first quarter, despite limited funding, the program successfully mentored four girls after raising $1,600 locally. These young leaders have undergone workshops on:

  1. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Enhancing their ability to navigate challenges and propose effective solutions.
  2. Effective Communication and Leadership: Equipping them with tools to lead and inspire change in their schools and communities.
  3. Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR): Providing them with knowledge and confidence to advocate for their health and rights.

The mentorship sessions were complemented by individual and group counseling to address personal and societal challenges.

Challenges

  1. Limited Funding: Financial constraints have significantly affected the program's capacity, limiting participation to only 4 girls instead of the target of 150.
  2. Logistical Issues: Limited resources impacted our ability to expand to multiple schools in Nyamira County.
  3. Community Awareness: Resistance from some community members due to entrenched cultural practices such as FGM requires further engagement and education.

Impact

Despite the challenges, the mentorship program has had a positive impact on the four girls mentored. They have expressed increased confidence and are eager to establish Jasiri clubs in their respective schools to ensure sustainability. Their engagement has inspired their peers, creating awareness of the importance of education and leadership among girls in their communities.

Next Steps

  1. Fundraising Efforts: Intensify efforts to secure funding from partners, donors, and grant programs to expand the bootcamp’s reach.
  2. Community Engagement: Organize advocacy meetings with local leaders and parents to address barriers such as early marriages and FGM.
  3. Scaling the Program: Develop a phased rollout plan to increase the number of beneficiaries as funding becomes available.

Conclusion

While the first quarter presented significant challenges, the Jasiri Teen Girls Bootcamp has laid a solid foundation for positive change. The stories of the four mentored girls reflect the program’s potential to transform lives. With additional support, we are confident that Jasiri can achieve its vision of empowering 150 girls to become agents of change in Nyamira County.
