Nutrition for Healthy Families is a sustainable empowerment program that aims to support healthy families among the urban poor in Krendang. Through this program the community is empowered to independently implement healthy living habits through a series of educational classes followed up with home visits.
A 2022 UNICEF report shows Indonesia faces undernutrition, obesity, and micronutrient deficiency, especially in poor families. In Krendang, West Jakarta, YB3 (2023) found only 30% of families eat vegetables, while 77% eat instant noodles weekly. A 2024 health check in partnership with a local university found 30% of children underweight. WHO (2023) says poor diets cause many serious diseases and 41 million deaths every year.
The Nutrition for Healthy Families program helps urban poor families in Krendang through education and mentoring. Families join 5 nutrition sessions to learn about healthy and affordable eating, practice it at home, and share it with others. Families who commit to lifestyle changes get home visits and support to keep applying what they learned. This program helps families build healthy habits for long-term change.
We are committed to measuring the impact of our Nutrition for Healthy Families program. The impact is seen when mothers change habits and share their learning with others. This is in line with our empowerment journey: understanding, practicing, and sharing experience with others. We work with the local women's committee to support wider community efforts and help schools take more ownership of the program.
