IsraAID is responding to a massive landslide that struck Enga Province, Papua New Guinea on May 24, 2024. The landslide buried homes, infrastructure, and farmland, trapping up to 2,000 people under the rubble. Nearly 7,500 people now face displacement amidst fears of a second landslide. IsraAID's emergency response team is supporting local efforts with urgent aid distribution and providing water, sanitation, hygiene, and mental health support for affected communities.
A devastating landslide hit Papua New Guinea's Enga Province on May 24th. Entire villages were buried and up to 2,000 people are still unaccounted for since search and rescue efforts ended. 7,500 people are at risk of further landslides as they await relocation, compounding an existing displacement crisis triggered by regional tribal conflict. More than 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) already faced multisectoral challenges, including child protection and limited access to safe water.
IsraAID is providing urgent relief to crisis-affected communities. We are working with local authorities to distribute emergency relief non-food items such as hygiene kits. We are also supporting water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives at a local health center amidst widespread unsafe practices that pose major public health risks. Additionally, IsraAID is providing psychosocial support to the most vulnerable populations to mitigate protection risks, including child exploitation and abuse.
IsraAID is prioritizing urgent needs while concurrently equipping vulnerable communities to cope with future challenges. Our interventions embed essential resources, knowledge, and skills within local communities, supporting them through the critical phases of relief and resilience-building too. We will accompany crisis-affected communities on their journey towards recovery, remaining responsive to changing needs, and providing the tools and support they need to rebuild a brighter future.
