Help us create and sustain a safety net of services for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Donations will fund our core services which include shelter, food, advocacy, hotline, child care, rental assistance, and support groups for trauma survivors.
Survivors of domestic violence and their children are one of most vulnerable populations and many times when they reach out for help the resources are exhausted. Currently only 8% of those seeking shelter are able to access services due to capacity. Each year at least 1/3 of all women murdered in the United States are killed by their intimate partner. One in Four women in Oregon identify as having experienced domestic violence in their lifetime.
The West is expanding our capacity as of 7/1/17 for 40 additional beds in our emergency shelter. This will double our capacity and allow more survivors safety after fleeing a violent relationship. Your gift for International Women's Day will support our shelter expansion project.
The provision of shelter and supportive services allows a survivor to escape a volatile situation where lethality may be imminent for her and/or her children. In 2016, there were 37 domestic violence related homicides in Oregon. The West also provides a community where kids who once lived in a violent home can be kids again and have safety & stability. This is a long term impact which reduces the inter-generational cycle of trauma and poverty.
