Girl Engineer aims to inspire 6,000 rural primary school girls aged (13 - 15) from 150 schools across Malawi to explore careers in the energy sector and challenge gender stereotypes that limit women and girls in the field. The project features motivational talks, interactive presentations, and question-and-answer sessions led by women and girls currently working in the energy sector.
In Malawi, women and girls face significant barriers to pursuing careers in the energy sector due to gender stereotypes that discourage them from enrolling in energy-related courses and programs. The lack of female role models in the sector further diminishes motivation, while energy poverty increases the time girls spend on household chores, such as collecting firewood, limiting their educational opportunities. Together, these factors widen the gender gap in the energy sector.
Through motivational talks, interactive presentations, and question-and-answer sessions led by women and girls working in the energy sector, the project will build confidence, spark interest, and empower girls to pursue careers in the energy field while connecting them with relatable role models and mentors for guidance and inspiration.
By inspiring 6,000 girls to pursue careers in the energy sector, this project will contribute to closing the gender gap and promoting diversity and inclusion within the field. By encouraging girls who are most impacted by energy poverty to enter the energy sector, we equip future innovators to bring fresh perspectives, drive innovation, and develop alternative and sustainable energy solutions that address the needs of all communities and transform lives across the nation.
