October Project Update: Guava jam and cactus

By Shoshana Grossman-Crist | Communications and Quality Control Coordinator

Guava jams for sale in Mexico City!
Guava jams for sale in Mexico City!

The microenterprises are achieving new levels of success with your support! A group of women entrepreneurs in Santiago del Rio is marketing their products to holiday consumers in Mexico City, while another group is gearing up to produce and sell a new product: cactus. Read on to hear about their progress.

From the community of Santiago del Rio in Oaxaca, ten women are celebrating the sale of their guava jams to consumers in Mexico City this holiday season. They’ve honed their recipe, increased production, and now their jams are ready for sale. Throughout November and December, IMIFAP will be selling these in holiday bazaars and beauty salons in Mexico City, as well as take direct orders. The women are excited to use the profits they will earn to support their families and invest in their growing business. If you are interested in further supporting these women by purchasing their jam, contact analilia@yoquieroyopuedo.mx.

In Concepción Buenavista, Oaxaca, ten members of the community bank are almost finished with plans to sell dried prickly pear cactus in Mexico City and possibly even to restaurants in California. Student volunteers from the University of Sor Juana have been helping the group perfect their recipes to sell the cactus with spices and sauces in a variety of flavors. Last month, the group purchased a solar-powered food dehydrator machine with an IMIFAP “I want to, I can” loan and just the other week they received training on how to use it. We expect large-scale production to begin in the coming weeks!

These developments would not be possible without your generous donation. IMIFAP and the program participants thank you for your continued support!
