Support indigenous women to market their products

This month, we’re focusing on a small group of women that participated in the workshop “I want to, I can… start my business” in the Mixteca Region of Oaxaca, which is a highly marginalized area. The workshop began with great enthusiasm on the part of the participants.

The participants worked together to increased their life skills with the support of Aldo Quintero, one of our facilitators. Aldo also helped the women to split up into two teams to write business plans. They developed three business plans for making crafts out of palm leaves, wheat tortillas, and embroidered napkins.

Aldo told us a little about his experiences with the women in the Mixteca Region:

“During my participation with the women that received this training, the process of community inclusion was palpable, revolving around the town center where the activities took place. People came together with the participating women, including children, and some parents who were interested in learning and being taken into account.”

“The role of women as the center of family development is crucial, not just as the promoter of culture and education to their children, but also the organization of the household, contributing to the family economy and in some cases earning all of the family income.”

“During the workshop, the women spoke about their life’s projects, their intentions for personal development, and they were made aware of the difficulties they have initiating, maintaining, and improving their small businesses… their willingness and determination are a key driver that allows them to have a broader perspective about what their lives might be.”

Este mes, nos enfocamos en un grupo pequeño de mujeres que participaban en el taller “Yo quiero, yo puedo… empezar mi negocio” en la Región Mixteca de Oaxaca. La región en que las mujeres viven es de alta marginación. El taller inicio con gran entusiasmo y con la participación de siete personas.

Las participantes trabajaron juntas para desarrollar habilidades para la vida con el apoyo de Aldo Quintero, uno de nuestros facilitadores. Aldo también apoyó a las mujeres en formar dos equipos para escribir planes de negocio. Ellas elaboraron tres planes de negocio de artesanías de palma, tortillas de trigo, y bordado de servilletas.

Aldo nos comentó un poco sobre sus experiencias con las mujeres en la Región Mixteca:

“Durante mi participación con las mujeres que recibieron esta capacitación, el proceso de inclusión comunitaria fue palpable, entorno al centro donde se desarrollo la actividad se daban cita no solo las mujeres participantes, también niñas y niños, algunos padres de familia interesados en aprender y ser tomados en cuenta.”

“El rol de la mujer como eje central del desarrollo familiar es crucial, no solo son las responsables de promover la cultura y la educación de sus hijos/as, también de la organización domestica, aportar a la economía familiar y que en algunos casos son ellas las que aportan la totalidad de los ingresos familiares.”

“Durante el taller hablaron de sus proyectos de vida, de sus intenciones de desarrollo e hicieron conscientes sus dificultades para emprender, mantener  y mejorar sus proyectos productivos, su disposición y determinación fue un motor clave para tener perspectivas mas amplias de lo que su vida puede ser.”
