Kajal's Journey of Confidence and Education

By Shivkumar Sharma | Project Leader

Kajal is a 13-year-old girl living with her parents and her sibling. Both parents work as daily wage labourers. She has congenital deafblindness, with low vision and hearing impairment, identified shortly after birth.

She joined the Sparsh Project supported by Sense International India in November 2025 after being connected to the programme by project staff.

Challenges Before Support
Before joining the programme, Kajal was concerned that further deterioration in her vision might interrupt her education. Although she could understand situations and interact appropriately with her family, she lacked confidence about her studies and future opportunities. Her parents were also worried about her education, independence, employment prospects and overall well-being.

Individualised Learning and Family Support
With regular guidance from key worker Anita and vocational trainer Diksha, Kajal received support in communication, academic and pre-academic learning, home management, daily living activities, confidence and social participation. Her parents were involved through home-based follow-up and guidance.
The project team also helped the family obtain Kajal’s disability certificate and access the disability pension scheme.

Progress in Education and Daily Life
Since joining the programme, Kajal has shown improvements in communication and learning. She expresses herself more confidently, communicates verbally, follows instructions and interacts more effectively with family members and others. Her educator reports better academic performance and greater interest in studying.
Kajal particularly enjoys Hindi, spending time with her peers and helping with household tasks, including keeping the house clean. She participates more comfortably with other children, although she remains hesitant to speak with unfamiliar people.

Her Family’s perspective
“With the support and guidance of the project staff, our daughter has improved in her studies, communication, and household activities. We are happy with her progress and feel more hopeful about her future.”

Thank You GlobalGiving and its donors for supporting opportunities for children with deafblindness and multiple disabilities to learn, participate and build confidence. Kajal’s journey reflects the importance of individualised education and family involvement.
