By improving access to safe drinking water, you help to reduce cholera and other waterborne related diseases from 17% to 0%; you help reduce school dropout rates related to lack of water from 39% to 0%; and help reduce incidences of gender based violence. This project repairs existing boreholes and wells which are in disrepair and that need periodic servicing
Blantyre Rural North has a population of about 60, 000 people. The area relies on shall wells and boreholes for its water. Usually, 60% of these wells are in schools, markets and other public places. However, 70% of these wells are usually neglected and do not produce water due to frequent breakdowns. The World Bank reveals that 72% of the population lives under extreme poverty; cholera and other waterborne related diseases account for 17%; 37% of children dropout of school due to lack of water
People Serving Girls At Risk (PSGR) partners with credible water service providers like the Christian Service Committee to undertake repairs of malfunctioning water hand pumps. Under this project, PSGR will buy spare parts for use by technicians from Christian Service Committee in the repairs exercise. The spares will be used to maintain and replace worn-out parts in order to refurbish and resuscitate the wells. Once repaired, the hand pumps are given a new lease of life for another 6-9 months
The impacts of this project are far-reaching. Firstly, the project shall greatly help to prevent unnecessary deaths brought by cholera and other waterborne related diseases; the project helps to reduce poverty and illeteracy levels as children especially girls are kept in school; restore human dignity and improved health for women and children as they no-longer walk long distances to fetch water; it helps to address nutrition and food security as women can develop vegetable gardens around homes
