Support for children at Emandlelweni
By Lucinda Kerschensteiner | Director
Uhambo has continued working with with the Emadlelweni Care Center in a small rural community in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The center is a good representation of the type of work Uhambo provides in rural and under-resourced regions of southern Africa. Uhambo has been working with parents of children with disabilities in the community to establish a home-based program because the center can be hard to reach. Uhambo goes for the small wins on a daily basis. For example, a grandparent of a child with a disability in this region shared that her responsibilites at home have increased recently because family members have moved into the household. She recognizes that this is all-consuming and taking away from providing developmental opportunities for her grandchild with a disability. She is now understands the value of the home-based program and has committed to having her grandson attend.
In addition, Uhambo builds connections and network among regions to support child care centers. In this case, Uhambo will link Emandlelweni to another center in the region to help strengthen the center's management skills and provide mentoring of the staff.
Thanks to your suppoprt for making opportunities like this available to care centers and communities throughout southern Africa.

Great accomplishment - completing a 4 day training
Uhambo has been working recently with the Emadlelweni Care Center in a small rural community in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Emadlelweni is an early childhood development center which serves many children with disabilities in the surrounding area. However, many of the families cannot attend the center due to transport, financial, and environmental barriers. Therefore, Uhambo went to their homes and conducted disability training for parents and for the caregivers of the Center to promote the development of children with disabilities.
During our time at Emadlelweni, Uhambo provided workshops on our award-winning Ndinogona "I Can" stimulation program and parent support programs. We also held seating clinics at the center and provided specialized devices made for each child. These programs empower the parents and the Center staff, while providing transformative developmental opportunities for the children.
We are so thankful for your support of Emadlelweni! There is more work to be done at Emadlelweni and other surrounding communities, so we continue to raise funds for our work in this region.

Support for Emadlelweni!

Location of the Emadlelweni Center
Uhambo has been supporting the Emadlelweni Centre, a day center for children with disabilities, in the Indwe Township in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Set in a rural rea, many parents have a difficult time transporting their children to the center for services. Given these logistical challenges, Uhambo is providing training to the parents and center staff so parents are equipped to provide support to their children from home. Home-based intervention is currently the only way to support these children and their families. The caregiver training allows them to increase their capacity and conduct stimulation-based programs to the children who range from primary school age to young adults.
These programs provide an opportunity for the children of this community to be included in developmental opportunities and for their families to be more confident in engaging with the community.
Thank you for your continued support of our programs that support inclusivity and allow children with disabilities to reach their full potential!
