Thanks to a grant from the Rotary Foundation, the Shonaquip / Uhambo Foundation team from Cape Town, South Africa came to Colorado to conduct training with the Uhambo USA team for two weeks. The goal of the grant was to pilot the Ndinogona "I Can" Stimulation Program -- a program that uses play to promote the development of children with disabilities. This program has been quite successful in South Africa and other African regions in various settings. The South African team provided presentations and trainnigs to disability and educational groups in Northern Colorado and received warm welcomes and positive feedback about the usefulness of the program. The program is a Train the Trainer model and consists of trainnig curriculum designed for caregivers, educators and parents and a kit of activities and toys that are utilized with the curriculum. In addition to providing training and information sessions, the team engaged in activities to learn about the Northern Colorado community and interact wtih Rotary members in the area. We are pleased with the outcomes of this training opportunity and excited about next steps to further bring the I Can program to the US.
