In Colombia children face serious risk of dropping out because their school does not offer them the right conditions to go to study. We created Escala programme because we think that a person who stays in school and completes the learning process until graduation, will have a better quality of life.
Multiple factors affect the permanence of students in their school: personal and family issues, poor school infrastructure, lack of pedagogical material, and risk situations in their communities. The COVID - 19 Pandemic has increased the risk of school drop-out, especially in the students who are close to graduate: Lady and her classmates do not have connectivity in their homes and have restricted access to PCs or smartphones. Dropping out of school perpetuates social and economic inequalities.
Based on a deep understanding of the local dynamics, the community, and the school, Escala selects the best social and educational initiatives to prioritize and address the main problems that could contribute to young students dropping out of their studies. In this school, we aim to reinforce the importance of self-care, the caring of others and the environment by training teachers, students, and families in social-emotional skills. Escala seeks to provide concrete tools that remain over time.
In rural Colombia, only 50 out of every 100 children who start primary school can finish their studies. Through Escala and the concert of all the actors of the educational community, we will be able to reduce school dropouts and increase the available possibilities for young students from this rural school in Guachene. In the medium and long term, we expect them to have access to better opportunities so that Lady and her classmates can improve their quality of life and transform their community.
