Improving lives with value added wood, Costa Rica

by ASIREA Asociacion para el desarrollo sostenible de la Region Atlantica

Over 100 families reforest our farms each year, but when the trees are mature and we harvest the wood we get very low prices because it is sold as a raw material. ASIREA unites our families to be able to successfully dry our wood together and have a just income for many years of work.

Reforestation is urgent in a world with climate change. In developing countries it helps farmer families harvest trees sustainably, protecting natural forests. If trees produce income locally, this in turn makes more people want to plant trees, expanding local forests. Unfortunately, our farmers are getting very low prices for their wood because of the lack of processing. ASIREA is a local farmer organization fighting to solve this problem.

Drying wood creates a new product that has demand by furniture makers who are willing to pay much more for better quality. ASIREA will assist farmers in processing their wood, and will install a solar wood dryer to increase value of sustainable harvested wood. Imagine that the wood is SIX TIMES MORE VALUABLE IF DRIED! Your help is needed so we can buy the solar dryer!

Long-Term Impact

The long term impact is that planting trees will become a sustainable economical alternative for farmers. If reforestation is seen as a potential income, more and more farmers will plant trees, changing the landscape, changing lives, creating new jobs and businesses and saving soils and water.
