Bears in captivity were traditionally kept in sparse concrete pits, while visitors peered down at them. While many facilities have since changed how they care for them, sadly a number have not, resulting in hundreds of bears around the world still suffering. We work tirelessly to change this, providing bespoke training, advice and support to captive wildlife facilities worldwide to improve the way they care for bears and other animals on a daily basis, ensuring they live a life worth living.
Bears, like many wild animals, often do not have their welfare needs met in captivity. Poor health, boredom and stress can result in immense and enduring suffering. They are complex, intelligent animals who would naturally have a large, diverse habitat range. We find that animal care staff often want to improve their well-being but don't know how. Providing education and training, we take a compassionate, collaborative approach providing immediate relief and improvements to the animals' welfare.
Working in collaboration with captive facilities, we provide training, support and advice to upskill animal care staff, identifying a plan of action to immediately improve welfare standards and care for individual animals in need of help. This includes bespoke enclosure design, enrichment programmes, dietary and nutritional support, veterinary and husbandry advice. In addition, we are working towards improving animal welfare at a national level through long-term policy and legislation change.
While we have rescued many bears, enriched their lives and provided comprehensive enclosure improvements, there is still more to be done. With your support, we can continue improving the welfare of hundreds of captive bears and other wild animals worldwide, by providing long-term support to animal care staff and helping end animal suffering. We drive the improvement of welfare standards and facilitate positive change, ensuring all wild animals not only survive but thrive under human care.
