Emerging Change Agents

By Comfort Ikpeme | Project Leader

Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) has over the past 22 years reached in-school and out-of-school girls with sexuality and adolescent reproductive health and rights information in her various centres. Majority of these girls in these centres, have gained accurate information to make informed life decisions and are able to reach out to their peers with acquired knowledge and skills. One notable emerging change agent is Victory who is currently in level two (Bossoms group) of the weekly safe space lessons. She exhibits high level of information and leadership skills in the group.

Victory, 18 years old, has in the past 3 months reached out to the girls in her neighbourhood – Eburutu Barracks, Calabar, Cross River State, with information gained from the weekly safe space lessons after noticing that these young girls lacked sexuality and adolescent reproductive health and rights information. Their risky behaviours led to teenage pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs). Three girls became pregnant and dropped out of school. So Victory took it upon herself to carry out a door-to-door outreach where she provided information to the girls. When she noticed it was not convenient, she decided to have a particular place where she held meetings with them on weekly basis.

Victory is really happy as she has done this for three months, and the girls’ parents are really excited about the change in behaviour of their wards. She also feels happy for being a change agent who creates impact in the lives of young girls. Consequently, she enrolled 12 girls in her established safe space in the GPI weekly programme.
