The project is designed to empower 10,000 Refugees and Victims of armed conflict and their host communities through sustainable agriculture and social services in Cameroon. It will provide a set of agronomic practices to suit the agro-ecology of the farming communities and ensure food security and community buy-in and better productivity, and focus on agroforestry, home gardens and hygiene and sanitation, aiming to reach 10000 Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons directly in 10 years.
Cameroon host over 10,000 refugees from Central African Republic and Nigeria and over 2Million Cameroonians are internally displaced due to armed conflict in the two Anglophone regions and Boko haram Insurgent in the northern parts of the Country. Food and nutritional insecurity, poverty, poor hygiene and sanitation are the common challenges faced by these people and their host communities. Agriculture is their main source of livelihood but climate change further compromise food security.
Through a refugee led and local approach, IAA will facilitate a series of awareness camps and training events on topics including; agroforestry, sustainable vegetable gardening, environmental sustainability, climate-smart agriculture, hygiene and sanitation and on adequate nutrition. Additionally, various agronomic practices will be introduced at different stages depending on the climatic conditions of the areas and inter-cultural and inter-faith dialogue will be promoted to build peace.
The project will train and support 1000 Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons annually, allowing them to come out of poverty which will provide for their families and host communities, health, access to education and increased food security and climate resilience. The project will also increase intercultural and religious understanding allowing over 10,000 refugees and internally displaced persons to live in harmony which will lead to sustainable development.
