During our latest mission to Burundi in June, we made great progress, despite some challenges posed by the ongoing fuel crisis. Our collaboration with the University of Burundi (UNIBU) has deepened, especially as we delved into understanding the country's dairy and meat industries. We spent time on the ground, engaging with 339 individuals from various points of the food production chain.
One of our key achievements was training local farmers on better feeding techniques for their livestock. To support rural areas, we also ramped up the production of nutritional supplements, distributing them through rural service centers. This has been a game-changer, especially for smaller communities who’ve struggled with access to resources. The demand for these supplements and our training programs continues to grow: we were able to provide essential resources and knowledge to over 120 farmers and producers across the provinces of Ruyigi and Rutana.
In addition to direct training, we distributed animal feed supplement kits, to the most remote areas where access to this kind of resources is more difficult. These kits were a lifeline, especially for farmers who were struggling to keep their livestock healthy amid rising costs and scarcity of resources.
On the research front, our work with UNIBU is on track. The data we’ve gathered is rich with potential, and we recentlypublished a paper in the International journal of animal science, husbandry and livestock production that addresses food safety and public health issues in Burundi ( https://www.advancedscholarsjournals.org/journal/ijashlp/articles).
We're also forging new partnerships internationally, which is opening up exciting new opportunities for sustainable agriculture and pastoral farming interventions. None of this would be possible without your support, and we’re incredibly grateful.
