Summary

On July 31, 2016, the International Medical Crisis Response Alliance is conducting its 4th Colloquium in Sendai, Japan entitled,"The Tohoku Earthquake-Tsunami Caregiver Experience: The Long-Term Caregiver Experience: Patients, Providers, Pragmatics". Upon review, there is little available on the longitudinal medical and psychological aspects of disaster recovery. Our ultimate aim is to produce a source of reference for long-term healthcare providers worldwide.

Challenge

Despite all we learned from the disaster that was the East Japan earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, there are serious gaps in our efforts to use the terrible events of that day to optimize the response to future catastrophes. Review of the current literature shows that there is little available on the longitudinal health affects of disaster recovery. This is critically valuable and therapeutic information for Japan - and further - the rest of the world.

Solution

Following this conference and accompanying workshop, what we've learned in Japan will be available by a Conference Proceedings document which will be published in the American Journal of Disaster Medicine to be used as a comprehensive and vital source of reference for long-term healthcare providers worldwide.

Long-Term Impact

Expert interactive native-language advice on the long-term medical and psychological affects following disasters will be available to the public, information that remains obscure for communities at large, as well as for many physicians, in east Asia. This information will be applicable for use by long-term care providers facing disaster recovery worldwide. The colloquium and workshop will be covered live and recorded for permanent access via our websites.
