Synopsis of the SORD

Sanid Organization is a non–governmental, non-profit and non-partisan Organization that works independently in the whole country of Yemen. Although it commenced operation as a youth initiative, it was officially established and registered in 2014 by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Office under license No (1013). Since its establishment, the organization has implemented a variety of programs in food distribution, improvement of livelihoods, health care and treatment of malnutrition among the children under 5 years age, pregnant and lactating women and WASH in the most of the Governorates of Yemen.

Sanid is actively engaged in providing lifesaving services and relief assistance to the most vulnerable persons, poorest HHs and marginalized groups desperately in need of essential necessities for survival through provision of food baskets, NFI items and shelter.

The Organization strives to improve the living standards of the above categories of the population with special focus on women, youth and children. The Organization has implemented many humanitarian and relief projects in a reliable and efficient manner and at the lowest cost. Cost-effective manner.

The organization provides services via consultation and partnership with the beneficiaries in all work stages beginning with identifying the requirements, planning, and improvement of work tools, implementation, follow- up and evaluation.

Project backgroung

The humanitarian situation in Yemen has deteriorated devastatingly after the conflict and violence broke out since March 2015. As an immediate consequence, the already dire situation worsened. Food insecurity, population displacements, limited access to basic services, disease outbreaks, limited access to health and WASH services are all contributing factors which led to emergency malnutrition crisis.

Seven million, four hundred thousand people, nearly a quarter of the entire population, are malnourished, many acutely so. Acute malnutrition rates exceed the WHOemergency threshold of 15 percent in five governorates andclose to 30 percent of all districts record critical levels ofmalnutrition. Two million malnourished children underfive and 1.1 million pregnant and lactating women requireurgent treatment to survive.

Project Summary

This tragic situation calls all local NGOs for concerted humanitarian efforts on the national level in Yemen to alleviate and combat famine in Yemen. Sanid responded to the national call to combat malnutrition among children under the age of five and contribute to reducing the number of deaths among children U5 years, pregnant and lactating women as a result of malnutrition which is resulted of the war and Extreme poverty and famine that is sweeping the Yemeni society.

As a humanitarian duty, the organization responded to this appeal and began opening a health center in Dec, 2018 In partnership with ACT foundation and in coordination with the Office of the Ministry of Health in the Directorate. to treat cases of malnutrition with simple possibilities. Where theorganization built its bet on addressing 67 severely malnourished children As a normal rate in accordance with international standards based on the total target population.. Surprisingly, however, the number of children U5 years coming to the health center reached 221 malnourished children. This has made the organization assess the need for the target area with a population of 17,800. It turns out that there are:

  • 1980 Children U5 years suffer from acute undernourished.
  • 1045 children under two years of age suffer from acute malnutrition.
  • 1360 pregnant and lactating women are malnourished.
  • 189 children suffer from sever acute malnutrition with complications.
  • 4 children are died during March due to sever acute malnutrition with complication.
  • 67% of the target population needs to be aware of the dangers of acute malnutrition and how to prevent them.

What have we achieved and what is the problem?

As mentioned above this project has been running in Dec, 2018 Health center to treat acute malnutrition. It reduction of excess morbidity and mortality caused by malnutrition amongst 167of children under 5 years of age and 150 of pregnant and lactating women (PLW).

This project addresses malnourished cases and contribute to reducing the number of deaths among children U5 years, pregnant and lactating women as a result of malnutrition.

What we have accomplished over the past four months is as follows:

For Dec 2018:

Number of Children U 5 years are 170 M, 169 Famail as new registrant.

Number of Pregnant and lactating women (PLW) are 150.

Number of sever acute malnutrition cases (SAM) that get treated are 66 children U5 yr.

Number of medium acute malnutrition MAM get treated are 117 children U5 yr.

Number of children affected by malnutrition and given plumpy Doz. As a two-week preventive measure  are 156 children under 5 yr.

Number of severely malnourished children with complications and referrals are 5 children U5 yr

Children who have been cured are 0

For Jan, Feb, Mar 2019:

Number of children who have been re - admitted to the program 183

Number of Children U 5 years are 87 M, 133 Famail as new registrant.

Number of Pregnant and lactating women (PLW) are 75.

Number of sever acute malnutrition cases (SAM) that get treated are 134 children U5 yr.

Number of severely malnourished children with complications and referrals are 10 children U5 yr.

Children who have been cured are 86.

Number of children who have died since the beginning of the year 2019 are 3 becuase they were have SAM with complications in risk level.

The problem is thse number are above of programs targeted number this has made the organization assess the need for the target area with a population of 17,800.

80% Of the population have no access to the health unit due to extreme poverty and inability to provide transport costs.

This has made us plan to expand project activities and cover the entire target area and reducing the number of deaths among 3026 children U5 years, 1360 PLW as a result of malnutrition.

How we will do that?

Strengthen and scale up current activities to cover whole targeted area which will save lives of 3,128 Children (under five) U5 & 1,360 (PLWs) through health center and community health volunteers (CHVs) for poor families who can't reach to the health center. 1. Stories and Appeal.

1. Ahmad's story with CMAM program and Sanid Ordanization

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZx35ls_ISs

Father Ahmed. He talks about the economic situation and the poverty they suffer from.
"A Son suffered from weakness and acute malnutrition. He did not have the ability to go to hospitals as well as he can not afford the transportation and the expenses of treatment. They can hardly provide the basic needs for their day. They also can’t provide adequate nutrition for their child.
Ahmed says Sanid organization is the only organization that intervened in the area where they live. This area is located on the outskirts of the city. It is a target for the poor and the marginalized, as well as the large influx of displaced people due to cheap rents and modest homes.
Ahmed used to hesitate to the health unit to treat his son from acute malnutrition and improve his health.
He is now happy that his son has become safe from the specter of famine. He is also reassured that Sanid is nearby. In addition to the periodic inspection of the mobile team for their children.
Ahmed knows about the size of the tragedy in the area where he lives. He also knows that the potential of the program is limited and can not cover the entire area. This is why Ahmed is participating in the campaign of appealing to promote, strengthen and scale up the current program and provide services to address malnutrition for all people in this region.

2. Sara's story with CMAM program and Sanid Ordanization

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkAGk-KYyXw

The Mother Sara. She talks about the economic situation and the poverty they suffer and how they live in a difficult situation. Sarah says they live in a single room with the rest of her family. What is sad is that this room is high rent.
Sarah talks and says they need to intervene more and cover basic needs. They are displaced people who have left everything they have to save their lives from war. Sara says they have nothing and need water, food, shelter, health and protection. They want a decent life.
Sara says her daughter is malnourished and is currently receiving treatment at Qa'a Al Eara health unit under the supervision of Sanid.
"A daughter suffered from weakness and acute malnutrition. They did not have the ability to go to hospitals as well as they can not afford the transportation and the expenses of treatment. They can hardly provide the basic needs for their day. They also can’t provide adequate nutrition for their child.

3. Story success and suffering

https://youtu.be/UH2ZfmnbLLA

From the experience of the Organization about the conditions of the Yemeni people, especially the displaced. Sanid launched a campaign to treat malnutrition by the mobile teams. I have supported two teams to help children in poor and remote communities . This teams provide nutrition services and treatment of malnutrition, facing risk and suffering to reach beneficiaries at home. This activity is one of the activities of the strategic plan to combat famine and help malnourished children and mlnourshed pregnant and lactating women (PLW) who are unable to reach the health center.
