Empower 5,000 Nigerian Women to Overcome Menopause

By Mosunmola Dosunmu | PROJECT LEADER

PROJECT SUMMARY

The iWalk4Menopause2025 campaign is a nationwide awareness project led by the Menopause Support Initiative (MSI) to support women aged 38 and above who are experiencing perimenopause and menopause.

Since its inception, MSI has directly supported over 5,000 women through physical outreach, community walks, and health education programs, and has reached more than 70,000 people online through social media awareness, webinars, and virtual support groups.

The iWalk4Menopause2025 project continues this mission by organizing 10km awareness walks across five states — Abuja, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Port Harcourt. Each event features health talks, interactive discussions, a therapeutic Sip & Paint activity to promote mental wellness, and a Raffle Draw to encourage community participation.

By combining movement, creativity, and education, the campaign empowers women to understand their bodies, access the right care, and embrace menopause with confidence, dignity, and pride.

THE CHALLENGE

More than 18 million Nigerian women aged 45yrs and above experience perimenopause and menopause without proper knowledge, support, or access to care. The topic is often treated as a taboo, leaving many women to struggle in silence with symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, depression, and low self-esteem. Most workplaces and communities lack awareness or policies to support menopausal women, causing reduced productivity and emotional distress. In Nigeria, where over 60% of women face these symptoms without guidance, the impact extends beyond health — it affects families, marriages, and economic stability

WHAT WE OFFER ( SOLUTION)

The iWalk4Menopause2025 project is providing practical support and nationwide awareness for women aged 38+ who are transitioning through menopause. We are organizing 10km awareness walks in Abuja, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Port Harcourt to bring women together, educate the public, and challenge stigma.

During each walk, we offer:

  • Health talks from trained menopause advocates
  • Free symptom education and resources
  • Peer support to reduce isolation
  • Referrals to healthcare providers when needed
  • Sip and paint to promote mental wellness
  • Raffle draw to encourage participation and community bonding

By making menopause visible in communities, families, workplaces, and media, we help women get the information, confidence, and support needed to stay healthy and productive. This campaign gives them a voice — ensuring no woman in Nigeria suffers menopause challenges alone or in silence.

POTENTIAL LONG TERM IMPACT

The iWalk4Menopause2025 campaign aims to create lasting social and health impact for women across Nigeria. By normalizing conversations about menopause and building supportive communities, this project will reduce stigma, promote early intervention, and encourage more women to seek help confidently.

Over time, increased awareness will lead to:

  • Improved health outcomes for women aged 38 and above through better understanding and management of menopause symptoms.
  • Stronger community support systems, where women openly share experiences and access guidance.
  • Workplace and policy inclusion, as more institutions begin to recognize and support menopausal women.
  • A generational shift in attitudes, ensuring younger women grow up informed and empowered about midlife health.

In the long term, this initiative will help transform menopause from a silent struggle into a celebrated phase of strength, wellness, and renewal for Nigerian women.
