Thank you for your incredible support! Through your generous donations on GlobalGiving.org and our off-line giving programs, we have sponsored all 50 children that were waiting to join our program. The funds raised will support 10+ years of academic programming, tutoring, mentoring, service learning programs, and college and career preparation including a $10,000 scholarship for each student to use towards his or her college education. The new Dreamer class of 50 Dreamers is called the Rocky Mountain Dreamer Class, and they are currently 2nd graders at Rocky Mountain Elementary in Longmont, Colorado.
The Rocky Mountain Dreamer class will replace Longmont’s Casa Dreamer Class, a class that was sponsored in 2000. The Casa Dreamers were different ages when they were sponsored, and the youngest Casa Dreamers are graduating from high school in May of this year, but many Dreamers have already gone on to accomplish great things in their education and careers. Casa Alum Gabby Hernandez graduated from Niwot High School in 2010 and is currently finishing her senior year at New Mexico Highlands University, where she is very involved on campus and has emerged as a leader. She is involved with MeCHA and was even elected president of the group in only her sophomore year. Gabby is also an advocate for Immigrant Rights and Reform and is a Coordinator for Dreamers in Action (DIA). Gabby will be graduating this spring with Bachelor’s Degrees— one in Spanish and one in Media Arts. Casa Program Director Rigo Tostado said of Gabby, “She tackles any challenge she faces head on and does not seem to ever be intimidated by anything. It has been great to see Gabby grow into a very independent and confident person while in college and I am very excited to see what she does next, because I know it will be something great.” To learn more about Gabby’s story, click here.
Because of you, young Dreamers can grow up to be successful adults like Gabby. Four years ago, the “I Have a Dream” Foundation Board of Directors announced its intention to launch a new class of Dreamers every year for the next five yearsin Boulder, Lafayette and Longmont. This ambitious plan adds 250 new Dreamers to the program between 2011 and 2016. The Rocky Mountain Dreamer class is the fourth class to be added as a part of this plan. Thank you for your help in raising the remainder of the funds for the Rocky Mountain Dreamer class and for your on-going support in changing the lives of our Dreamers!
