Tohum Autism Foundation, a Turkish based organization, opened a school for children with Autism in 2006. There was an enormous need for such a school where currently 126 students are enrolled. Turkey is among the countries with the biggest need in this sense. The percentage of special needs students is about 1% in Turkey whereas it is 3-6% in Europe. This means that great majority of special needs children, many with autism, cannot receive special education services in Turkey.
There is a major lack of educational facilities for children with Autism in Turkey.
Tohum Autism Foundation has built a school in Istanbul for children with Autism.
Tohum Autism School hopes to grow to cities all around the country, providing special education programs to students that are not receiving adequate care.
