The 2021 hurricane season was one of the most active on record. Thanks to your support, Health Equity International/St. Boniface Hospital (HEI/SBH) made it through the season ready to respond to all storms that came our way, while protecting our staff and caring for our patients.
Southern Haiti was spared the worst of this active hurricane season and weathered only two storms: tropical storm Elsa and tropical depression Grace. Thanks to your support, we prepared for both by ensuring we had extra food, bottled water, and water purification tablets on hand; all windows were shuttered, sandbags were placed in flood-prone areas, and trees were trimmed; and emergency medical teams were on call. Fortunately, neither storm brought devastating damage. However, Grace landed in southern Haiti just two days after the devastating August 14th earthquake. Before Grace landed, HEI/SBH sent tarps and food supplies to health facilities in earthquake-affected areas to reinforce their ability to prepare for the storm and avoid further damage.
Because we were prepared for these disasters, HEI/SBH was able to focus on leading the region’s healthcare response after the earthquake. You can read more about our earthquake response activities here: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/southern-haiti-earthquake-relief/.
Over the next few months, HEI/SBH will begin our preparation for the 2022 hurricane season. We will inventory what is left of our emergency supplies and any stock that will expire before May 2022 will be used this winter. In early spring, we will start to renew our stock of emergency supplies for the 2022 hurricane season.
Thanks to your support of our disaster preparedness activities, HEI/SBH was prepared to effectively respond to two storms this season as well as the 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Your generous support ensures that we can keep our doors open and provide lifesaving hospital services during times of crisis. On behalf of our staff and patients, we thank you!
