Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund Final Report

By Cheryl Senhouse | Finance Innovation Director

Caribbean Climate-Smart Accelerator Inc. (CCSA) formally announces the successful conclusion of the Hurricane Melissa Relief Project. We take this opportunity to convey our profound and sincere gratitude to every individual, organisation, and partner whose generosity and dedicated effort made this critical relief operation possible.

Successful Transfer of Funds and Scope of Impact

We are pleased to confirm that all funds meticulously garnered through this collaborative initiative will be transferred to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). This transfer ensures the highest level of efficiency and accountability, leveraging CDEMA's established expertise to direct essential aid precisely where it was most critically required across the severely affected territory of Jamaica.

The effect of this collective action was both immediate and substantial. Relief efforts coordinated by CDEMA and underpinned by robust collaboration, delivered a multi-faceted package of critical assistance. According to CDEMA’s final comprehensive Situation Report #18 (9th December 2025), this involved the timely distribution of:

  • Meals and Food Packages: the provision of over 3.7 million meals and the distribution of approximately 380,000 food packages to impacted families in Jamaica on behalf of donor agencies.
  • Infrastructure Support: the direction of resources toward the initial phase of vital infrastructure repairs, with a primary focus on restoring access to essential services and maintaining access to shelter through a network of 101 operational shelters.
    • power has been restored to 83% of affected customers.
    • power has been restored to 97% of major hospitals.
    • water supply has been restored to 83.2% of impacted customers.

The response is currently de-escalating but remains active, with CDEMA coordinating ongoing support, data updates, and phased medical team exits scheduled through January 2026. Ongoing coordination encompasses health infrastructure assessments, mental health support, child protection initiatives, and logistics shipments.

The Efficacy of Regional Cooperation

This initiative stands as a powerful and enduring testament to the strength and efficacy of regional cooperation and the deep compassion demonstrated by every contributor—ranging from large institutional donors to individual citizens—during a period of urgent, life-altering necessity for the residents of Jamaica.

While the process of full, long-term socio-economic recovery remains a continuous commitment for the affected communities, the immediate and tangible impact of your generosity has established a vital foundation. Your contributions have not only assisted families in commencing the complex process of rebuilding their homes and livelihoods but have also tangibly strengthened the region's overall resilience against the increasing threat of future catastrophic weather events.

Forward Focus: Preparedness for the Next Season

With CCSA’s Hurricane Melissa Relief Project officially concluded, the CCSA is now fully concentrating on proactive measures and preparedness activities for the upcoming 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. We remain committed to fostering climate resilience and sustainable development throughout the Caribbean, building upon the lessons learned and the successful partnerships forged during this essential relief mission. We reiterate our deepest gratitude and look forward to continued partnership as we work together to secure a safer, more sustainable future for the Caribbean.
