Hurricane Matthew: Medical Aid for Cuba

In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, Global Links has been in contact with the PAHO officials and Cuban health officials to assess the situation. With 10 provinces and more than 356,000 people affected by the hurricane, Global Links has been asked to focus on holistic and long-range medical system needs for the country. As of now, delivery is not appropriate as short-term response teams and organizations are still working to stabilize conditions and develop a plan to receive and integrate materials from Global Links. 

As we wait for the go-ahead our team has been preparing the items requested in the needs assessment: personal protective gear for both patients and health care workers (gowns, gloves, masks, etc.) and mobile medical equipment appropriate for field hospitals and other temporary medical shelters. 

Global Links has a long history of working in Cuba, including a nearly 5-year recovery project following Hurricane Sandy. As response turns to recovery in the aftermath of Matthew, Global Links will be there to provide materials and support to Cuba's public health system.
