Safe Schools, Safe Communities

By IsraAID Staff | IsraAID Dominica

Dominica is extremely vulnerable to climate-related disasters. IsraAID has worked in Dominica since 2017’s Hurricane Maria, actively supporting the country's long-term goal of becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation. We promote resilience and reduce the risks posed by disasters through education and livelihood programs.

One of the ways we do this is by helping schools prepare for all kinds of future hazards in our “Safe Schools” initiative. Today, we have worked with every school on the island, equipping them with an emergency response plan and the necessary resources to implement it effectively, including the additional needs of children with physical and learning disabilities. These resources include workbooks, teaching plans, emergency drills, and training sessions, all designed to empower teachers, parents, and caregivers with the knowledge and tools to ensure the safety of their communities.

As part of this program, IsraAID Dominica partners closely with the Dominica Fire and Ambulance Service. Together we train educational staff on CPR and First Aid, equipping them to support their students effectively during emergencies.

“Having these skills as a teacher is essential. Disaster Risk Reduction and First Aid education is vital information that we all need.” - Jessica, Kindergarten Teacher.

Recently, we donated a laptop and projector to support the Dominica Fire and Ambulance Service’s vital disaster preparedness and response efforts on the island.

“IsraAID's donation will significantly enhance our ability to deliver services like Fire Safety, First Aid, CPR, and staff training.” - Kennedy, Station Officer

IsraAID is committed to working hand in hand with schools and other vital partners in Dominica to promote a sustainable future and build powerful long-term resilience to climate-related threats.
