May 2024 Update - Hunger in Kentucky

By Stephanie Hester | Director of Development

Upon entering the pantry Susan loudly proclaimed “It’s done!" In response to questioning looks she elaborated “we just got custody of the kids.”

Susan and her husband have been going through a legal process to gain custody of two of their grandchildren, which had just been resolved and Susan was granted full custody. Two other grandchildren stay with the family almost every other week, meaning there are often six mouths to feed throughout the month.

Toddling behind Susan was two of her grandchildren, along with her husband who had suffered a stroke not long ago. While Susan shopped, the children carried the grocery bags before they got “too heavy,” for them.

After getting from the pantry all of the food that they could, Susan perused the hygiene shelves, selecting a three in one kids shampoo and laundry detergent. The kids beamed as the brightly colored green bottle of shampoo was placed in one of their bags while Susan said “it’s for your bath and there will be no getting out of it.”

Before leaving, the children eagerly examined the contents of each bag with the pantry staff, sharing their excitement about peanut butter and pancake mix.

This success story is all too common in Kentucky, which has some of the highest food insecurity rates for children in the nation.

That's why Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland developed a suite of programs under our Feeding Kids initiative. In Susan's case, her family visited a School Pantry in the Washington County School District. An intervention that serves the whole family, School Pantries are a new program for the food bank that are successfully serving neighbors facing hunger at places they're already visiting.

Our food bank currently operates six School Pantries throughout its 42 county service area with plans to expand. Your generous donations fuel Susan's determination for her grandchildren to grow up in a positive environment and achieve successful outcomes!
