This project will provide healthy and nutritious food to Kentuckians residing in the Appalachian and Delta regions of the state - also known as our nation's Diabetes Belts.
The Appalachian and Delta Regions in Kentucky are challenged by poverty and health disparities. Nationally, they're known as the Diabetes Belts. Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland serves 10 counties in the Appalachian Region and 14 counties in the Delta Region where food insecurity rates soar above national averages and neighbors facing hunger are often faced with the hard choice of buying medication or paying utility bills and putting food on the table.
Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland and our agency partners including food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and schools provide nutritious food to our neighbors facing hunger in these regions through programming that's targeted to serve children, seniors and families. These food resources help reduce the impact of poverty and food insecurity so seniors can buy much needed medications, children can thrive at home and at school and families can enjoy dinner together.
Neighbors facing food insecurity, experience malnutrition, poor health outcomes and mental health issues to name a few. The fact is food insecurity is considered a social determinant of health, along with housing and income. Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland's mission is reduce the impact of food insecurity so neighbors facing hunger can lead vibrant, healthy lives.
