It has rained far too little in the Horn of Africa for more than two years.
According to the United Nations, more than 20 million people there are in
urgent need of help as a result of a severe drought. 7.46 million children
are acutely malnourished. Millions of farm animals have already starved to
death, pastures have dried up, wells have dried up.
Aktion Deutschland Hilft´s alliance organization Malteser International is
now expanding its emergency aid from Kenya to Ethiopia and is providing
people with drinking water and cash.
Ethiopia: Two years without rain
"For about two years we have been providing people in northern Kenya who are
suffering from the effects of a devastating drought with drinking water, food
and cash. We are also distributing fodder. But in recent months more and more
people from Ethiopia have been crossing the border, in hoping to find enough
food for their livestock. To spare the families the hardship of fleeing and
conflicts to prevent the remaining resources, we are now expanding our help
to Ethiopia. Many families have already lost a large part of their livestock.
After more than two years of drought, the people are at the end of their
strength and the need is huge. Droughts are becoming more frequent as a result
of climate change. Ironically, the people who contribute the least to global
warming are suffering the consequences: they are starving and there is no end
in sight to this catastrophe," says head of Malteser
International's Africa department.
Aid organization provides people with water and food
With the support of the Federal Foreign Office, our alliance organization
Malteser International will now also be supplying drinking water, food and
supplementary food for pregnant women and small children in southern Ethiopia
in the coming months. Around 4,000 schoolchildren at ten schools in Ethiopia
are supported with a warm meal.
Here, too, the farmers receive fodder for their cattle.
"People in East Africa are currently dealing with so many crises at the same
time that we assume that without help, thousands could die," says head of
Malteser International´s Africa Department.
