The number of starving people around the world is rising. This is due to new and ongoing conflicts, the Pandemic and the perceptible aftermath of climate change.
But the rising price of food is also making it unaffordable for a large part of the population in many places. “The pandemic has exacerbated this Situation because many people have lost their income and don’t know how to nourish their families.” says a member organization of the alliance Aktion Deutschland Hilft.
Climate change is causing little rain in Kenya, leading to withered meadows and poor harvests. More than two million people here are currently at risk of acute malnutrition.
In addition, severe flooding occurs in South Sudan, forcing around 400,000 people to escape. They have hardly any food and water left. Around 7, 2 million people, approximately 60% of the rural population, are at risk of hunger. The reason for this are conflicts between different militia groups and constant expulsion. Recent floods significantly worsen the situation.
In addition to improved cultivation methods for efficient agriculture, wells are currently being drilled, to provide people with long term access to clean water and to enable them to irrigate small areas of land. Through member organizations the alliance therefore distribute food vouchers for particularly vulnerable families in the district of Isiolo.
Malnourished and undernourished children and women are treated in various programs, and two health facilities provide basic medical care and psychosocial support.
In parallel, training, tools and income-generating initiatives help to improve the nutritional situation of the people in a long-term and sustainable manner.
