In 2017, the drought affecting 23 counties in Kenya developed into a humanitarian crisis and was declared a national disaster by the Government of Kenya in February 2017.
Our member organisation “Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe” carried out a school feeding program in primary schools in Turkana / Kenya. Due to the drought crisis nearly all children come to school with minimal or no food at all. Therefore we provided food assistance for 3.000 pupils in six primary schools in Turkana region. The pupils got maize and beans and were supported with some basic personal items.
In Nasinyono village the “Johanniter” are supporting the Nasinyono community by rehabilitating the water inlet by de-silting and by creating an artificial river bank, so that water can pass through and thus irrigate the farm. It will also involve removing of prosopis plat’s poles which were heaped by the previous season’s floods in a stretch of 2 km distance. This will help to increase the water volume intakt to the farm
