With food and medicine against malnutrition

Treating sick and malnourished children
Treating sick and malnourished children

Since its separation from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan is the youngest country in the world. The independence has so far not improved the life of its people: More than half of the population lives in extreme poverty. Since the beginning of the civil war in 2013, Millions of South Sudanese have fled from home. As farmers cannot work on the fields, the country suffers under the lack of food supply. Droughts worsen the situation.

Our coalition member Johanniter works within the biggest refugee camp in the city of Wau. In their health centre, they treat refugees who are injured, sick or malnourished. As the famine continues, also people from surrounding areas and villages seek help at the health centre.

The aid workers in Wau focus on treating malnourished children under five years. In addition, adults and children with malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory diseases are treated. To establish a child’s state of malnutrition, the health works measure it by height and weight. In addition, aid workers measure the circumference of the middle upper arm with a special measuring tape, called MUAC. If the child suffers from light or severe malnutrition, the child is taken into the centre for treatment. Depending on the state of the malnutrition, the children must stay at the centre for several weeks. They must be slowly fed a special high calories diet. The centre also distributes medicine against other diseases.

As the health sector in South Sudan is chronically underfinanced, centres like this are often the only opportunity to seek medical help. To overcome malnutrition on the long run, our member organisations distribute food to families in need. They support schools with a hot meal per day, to ensure that the children go to school instead of working or begging. Furthermore, they help farmers with innovative watering systems and trainings, so they are able to harvest even in a drought.

We sincerely thank you for your kind donation for this project. With your support, our member organisations can treat malnourished and sick children in Wau and can implement other projects against famine in South Sudan. Thank you for making this possible.
