Dear Friends and Supporters,
Our Build for Education Project in Humla has now been fully funded and delivered and we are looking to the future. Our initial plan for 5 schools are in place and going forward we hope donors will support more schools in the future as part of our 3 year plan.
Many government schools in Humla are not fit for purpose. Where schools have been built, most have structural damage and are in dire need of repair to withstand harsh weather conditions and adding to the safety and comfort of pupils and staff.
The Build for Education in Humla Project has restored 16 schools to provide better teaching facilities for over 2,600 pupils and teaching staff. A prime focus was to ensure that girls receive similar choices to boys and raise their educational standards and life chances. Education levels in Humla rank amongst the lowest in Nepal, due to no secondary schools in 66% of the district. women and young children have the highest levels of illiteracy, skills and malnutrition.
The main objective of this project wss to repair/rebuild 16 government schools in Humla to provide a clean, safe and supportive environment. This will help teachers to deliver a better education to children.
A strength of the Nepal Trust is being able to partner with other organisations. One example of this was the partnering with Chiswick and Brentford Rotary Club in the UK, to raise funds to air lift food to the Muchu village school and also improve sustainability in the construction of a greenhouse to enable the school to grow fruit and vegetables for consumption and sale.
Looking ahead we will be engaging with more local schools across Humla to identify schools that would benefit from support with maintenance and repair work. We anticipate this project will run for many years.
A positive evaluation of our work in Nepal by the Government of Nepal
It appears that The Nepal Trust and its partner organizations are committed to enhancing the Government of Nepal's initiatives in collaboration with local communities in the project areas. They aim to address the communities' needs for improved access to fundamental services such as healthcare, education, agriculture, food security, clean water, employment, and sustainable energy resources. The Trust's contribution lies in empowering underprivileged communities to enhance their own quality of life. The Nepal Trust boasts an extensive track record spanning more than 25 years of engagement in Nepal. Its primary objective centres on collaborating with local communities to empower them through capacity-building initiatives.
Long-term impact
The Nepal Trust has been running health education programmes for a number of years that have helped to raise general health standards in the district. Good educational opportunities will raise overall standards and help to close the gender gap of educational attainment between boys and girls. Nearly 3,000 pupils and staff have benefited in year one of this project and this will also support their wider families as knowledge is disseminated.
Thank you for your continued support to this life-changing project in ensuring children and young people are able to receive education in a safe environment that is fit for purpose. Every $1 or £1 raised by the Nepal Trust is spent in the Nepal.
Namaste,
Anna McPherson.
