Empowering Futures through Digital Skills Report

By Hester Gartrell | Empowering Conflict-Affected Futures

In the past couple of months at Humans in the Loop Foundation, we have started three new trainings. Our HITL Stars program - an instructor-led course that launched in September 2024 and is set to finish in mid-December 2024. The program consists of two separate levels of English language - Pre-Intermediate (A2) and Intermediate (B1). Our English groups consist of a total of 42 participants. In May this year, we also launched our second edition of the HITL Intro to Graphic Design course which started with 37 participants and had its graduation event in August with 21 conflict-affected people receiving their certificates. In October this year, we launched our first HITL Intro to UX/I Design instructor-led course. At the moment we have 40 participants who will graduate in January 2025.

In addition to our English courses as part of the HITL Stars Programme, we also started our English Language Partnership program led by our Volunteer and Training Specialist. This program paired native English speaker volunteers with a total of 24 of our HITL Stars English course trainees. This program provided them with an additional hour a week to meet with someone and practice their speaking skills.

Additionally, in July we launched a fourth pilot project in Kenya, where we provided participants (both locals and people with refugee status in Kenya) with annotation skills and access to all our trainings on our Training Platform. We have conducted a train-the-trainer with a local representative on the ground who is supporting all participants throughout their skills-building process. So far this year, we have provided 120 people with skills training via our platform, and 60 of those are progressing to complete a paid mock annotation project. We are currently starting to work with an additional 40.

We have additionally launched our first English Speaking Club led by two volunteers supporting 19 beneficiaries with a B1 level of English or higher. The program is coordinated by our Volunteer and Training Specialist, who provides guidelines, and a created curriculum.

We are further excited to share that we welcomed our two new Social Impact Interns, who are supporting our Monitoring and Evaluation efforts, as well as our beneficiaries.
