Empower&EducateYouths For global Climate Action

Project Report | Feb 22, 2025
February 27,2025 Project ID# 67262 EMPOWER AND EDU

By Sylvester Egwu | PROFESSOR

This project is expected to transform the lives of 50 unemployed youths caught up in Omoku,Rivers state whose  means of livelihoods  have been destroyed  by incessant oil spills and bunkering activities by training  them on how to tackle the environmental challenges they face everyday and empower them with alternative opportunities for farming and fishing including crude oil spill clean up techniques to protect their communities.

Omoku community hosts 207 out of 416 oil wells in Rivers state, making it an epicenter for oil production, oil  pollution and climate pollution in Nigeria oil producing areas of Niger Delta region. Bunkering activities involve the open burning of crude oil to extract Petroleum products such as diesel, petrol etc for sale to meet up the youths economic needs.

One barrel of crude oil produces 468 kg of carbon dioxide when burnt.

Bunkering  activity as imimical as it is,exacerbates climate change and warming with the release  of tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to trap heat and cause rising temperatures, unpredictable weather patterns, flooding, deforestation, heatwaves, famine and wildfires.

Exposure  to Petroleum hydrocarbons can cause cancer of various forms, leukaemia, rashes in children, heart, kidney, liver failure and other health problems.in the oil producing areas.

Study predicts epidemic of cancer in oil producing areas of Nigeria in 2025.this yesr.

This important initiative has not yet attracted international attention ,concern abd support to generate  donations for the project. EARN  received  only one donation of $32in December, 2024.

However,we in EARN are vigorously seeking grants  to complement the efforts  of our partner, GlobalGiving to raise funds fot this project to get started in 2025.

The benefits of training youths to acquire practical skills to build their resilience and sustainable means of livelihoods cannot be over-emphasized as the training  in abandoned farming and fishing will be re-vitalized to combat and reduce restiviness, criminality, violence and create atmosphere of peace for the communities residing with crudr oil.

Agricultural activities and food production will improve and enhanced to prevent hunger, scarcity of food, and starvation with youths engaged in food production.

THEREFORE, HELP US TO HELP OTHERS AND PROTECT OUR EARTH'S PLANET.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION
