EARN in partnership with GlobalGiving is to raise funds to train 50 unemployed youths from Omoku,Rivers state in Niger Delta region in oil spil clean up,farming&fishing to improve livelihoods which 've been destroyed by pollution.129 million Nigerians are poor and hungry and the training of youths who are currently restive and violent will help give them skills and employmentThe solution to youth criminality and oil theft is to provide alternative livelihoods which the training will provide.
129 million out of 234 million Nigerians a poor and hungry particularly those living in oil producing areas of Niger Delta region who have lost their means of livilihoods due to oil pollution. Omoku community hosts207 out of 416 oil wells in Rivers state .Omoku youths are unemployed , restive and vulnerable to criminality and oil theft and illegal refineries activites which have exacerbated climate change and warming in the region The youths lack skills to build their capacity .
This project will train 50 Omoku youths in farming,fishing and acquire O8il spill clean up skills to enhance capacity and resilience in them. The project is community-led and will alleviate hunger and poverty and improve social and econmic wellbeing of the trainees The project will equip the trainees with better life skills to become more responsible citizens.
The long term benefits are that the youths will become emplyable and less attractive to oil theft and vandalism .Climate action will begin to take place by decarbonizing the region and stopping illegal burning of crude oil that is causing cancer and other Petroleum related diseases. Environmental restoration and climate justice ,paying way for better and sustainable Niger Delta region .
