Still Serving Despite Fire at Our Family Center

By Shondra Muhammad | Deputy Executive Director

While we’ve been working with others on disaster relief recovery, we were not expecting to be in the middle of our own disaster. But here we are.  On January 19, 2025, a historic fire took place at SHAPE Community Center’s Nia Becnel Family Center, located at 3815 Live Oak. We are eternally grateful that no one was physically harmed. We are grieving with the community for this loss, but we are on the road to recovery.

The impact from the fire has vastly decreased the amount of space that we have for conducting services, but we are rich in creativity, so we continue to serve the community—with some adjustments. Although we are temporarily not able to provide after-school care, the 1 family we were servicing that was displaced by Hurricane Beryl, has moved into a more long-term housing solution. We are still supporting approximately 10 families with group mental wellness counseling, and two children with more targeted individual counseling. Last month, we brought in approximately 15 individuals to assist with employment challenges.

In response to our own fire disaster, we hosted an in-person town hall meeting attended by 60-70 community members and stakeholders. The event was also live-streamed on social media. Participants received updates on the fire remediation and reconstruction process. Since the building was damaged to the extent that floors, walls, and ceilings were removed, they were also able to give input on renovations. Community members were grouped by tables of 5-10 people and created drawings with their ideas on the new building. Participants ranged from ages 5 to 80+.
