Shining time for our next women's generation

By Trang Nguyen | Sponsorship Manager

Following the success of the Women's Economic Empowerment Project - Phase 1 which is funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), KOTO was lucky to welcome 23 women coming from 15 provinces across Vietnam to joint the Her Turn Class 6. This is the first of six groups of women that will be joining KOTO's 6-month holistic hospitality training program over the next three years, which will see a total of 150 women take part in the program.

More over, as part of the Her Turn program, KOTO is proud to have partnered with Lightpath Leadership with the aim of empowering women in the hospitality and tourism industry, by providing leadership programs and creating a community designed to help women advance in their careers. The program is based on international research on women's leadership development, is firmly grounded in the reality of Vietnam, features expert industry speakers and deliberately engages sponsors within each of the participant's organisations that are committed to seeing women in their team advance into leadership positions.

On 25th November, the first of six modules was hosted at KOTO Studio in Hanoi and brought together 20 women working in the hospitality and tourism industry across Vietnam. It was a very special day and a huge achievement bringing together a group of such inspiring women from provinces across the country. During the workshop participants had the opportunity to get to know each other, connect their values and leadership purpose, share stories from their past and share their career goals for their future.

KOTO's pride is not only when our trainees achieve success from the vocational training course, but also when they find a way to give back to the place that once gave them love and hope for a better life. An incredible fundraising event was held on the 24th of October 2022 that raised much-needed funds for KOTO. Nhat Do (KOTO graduated trainee class 27) is an incredible young woman who has never forgotten where she came from and how she got here. She understood that happiness is the gift you give to others.

She organised and executed a fundraising evening filled with good food, wine, speeches, and good company- this is all for her KOTO “ siblings” back home in Hanoi - Vietnam, and thousands of miles away. The money raised ($8800 AUD) will ensure the KOTO trainees will have more computers and training materials at our very modest training school, nhat, and with the help from friends and supporters has also ensured that every single one of our trainees knows, they are loved and encouraged as they work towards a brighter tomorrow.

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela.

This is so relevant to our alumni class 11 Thuy Nguyen - who just graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management at Box Hill Institute, Australia.

Thuy - left home at the age of 13 to be a maid for families in Hanoi. Her father passed away when she was young, leaving her mother, a farmer, barely able to make a living for Thuy, her sister, and her brother, who suffers from mental health problems. She became a KOTO trainee in class 11 and graduated in 2009. Through KOTO she was able to get a job in a fine dining restaurant, earn a stable income and helped her sister complete her university studies alongside financially supporting her mother and brother.

Thuy won a KOTO scholarship to study a Bachelor of Hospitality Management at Box Hill Institute and has lived in Melbourne since 2018. Thuy’s life has come full circle, she has a great job as a restaurant manager in Bendigo, and she is an active alumnus of KOTO Alumni Community and a Trainee sponsor returning the favor to the organisation that helped change her life.

Thuy continues to be a role model for KOTO trainees and we wish her great success in her future endeavours as she pursues her next dream.
