Thank you for your continued belief in the Hope Restored project by HOPE worldwide Botswana! Through your generosity, our team has been reaching vulnerable children and caregivers in Broadhurst and Bontleng in Gaborone Botswana. This quarter, 239 individuals (168 children and 71 caregivers) were served making it 78% of the intended target delivering 814 services on health, hygiene, education and child development support.
Keeping Families Healthy and on Treatment
HwwB Community Facilitators provided HIV adherence support to 69 clients, with 2 receiving enhanced adherence support and 1 child receiving age-appropriate treatment literacy. Two referrals were completed for Sexual Transmitted Infections treatment and for CD4 and viral load testing, and hygiene (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) education reached 245 clients. Age-appropriate HIV prevention support was delivered to 168 children and caregivers and 125 women received women's health counselling.
In Broadhurst, a 67-year-old woman living with HIV accidentally fractured her leg and could no longer walk to the clinic where she receives medication. She could not afford regular taxi fares, and when her daughter went to collect the refill on her behalf, the health service provider could not assist due to protocols prohibiting her. Her treatment was therefore at real risk of being interrupted.
Seeing how critical the situation was, HwwB Community Facilitator stepped in. The Facilitator linked her with the Community Home-Based Care Focal Nurse at Broadhurst Traditional Clinic and with the Infectious Disease Control Center clinic, and arrangements were made for home-based assessment and support while she recovers. This reduced her need to travel to the clinic while she recovers.
The client's fractured leg and a lack of money for transport could have meant weeks without life-saving medication. Instead, a coordinated response between HwwB team and the government health services kept her connected to care and support service, thus restoring hope for her. No one should be left behind because of age, mobility or the cost of a taxi.
Never Missing the Care They Need
During a routine home visit, a Community Facilitator learned that Mariam, a 47-year-old mother of three, had missed her scheduled clinic appointments for a treatable health condition. The Facilitator counselled her on the importance of timely care and then went with her to the clinic, an accompanied referral that made sure she did not miss another chance.
Mariam received the treatment she needed. It is a small gesture in a long journey to recovery, but it exemplifies what routine home visits make possible: needs are spotted early, and families are intentionally accompanied to the services that leave a lasting impact.
What We Have Accomplished Together
This quarter:
Moving Forward
In the months ahead, emphasis will be on closing the gap on reaching the targeted 300. Now that HwwB partnership with the local clinics has been solidified, case finding and follow-ups will be intensified. Also, treatment interrupters will be prioritized and eligible children identified through clinic and community referrals. Collaboration with government facilities will be reinforced.
HwwB will also conduct targeted household visits for beneficiaries who have not yet received services, and strengthen appointment reminders through phone calls, SMS messages and caregiver engagement so that fewer families miss the care they need.
Thank you, beloved donors
You are not just funding a program; you are keeping lifelines open: medication within reach, clinic visits accompanied, and children and caregivers seen and supported in their own homes. Every home visit, every referral, every family reconnected to care all happens because you continue to choose to stand with us.
Thank you for not forgetting them.
