HOPE worldwide Botswana (HwwB) is seeking $30,000 to provide 12 months of critical support to 300 orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and their families in Gaborone and South East districts after sudden USAID funding termination left them without HIV treatment support, education assistance, and psychosocial care.
In January 2025, USAID abruptly terminated funding for HwwB's OVC program without warning, leaving over 1,000 vulnerable children and families without critical services. More than 50 staff were laid off overnight. District Health Management Teams report rising HIV infection rates in previously served areas. Children are dropping out of school, families are missing HIV clinic appointments, and the progress toward ending AIDS as a public health threat is at risk. HwwB clients feel very abandoned.
The grant will provide 12 months of targeted support to 300 OVC and their caregivers through: home-based case management with monthly household visits; HIV treatment support for 100 children living with HIV; household economic strengthening for 50 vulnerable families; psychosocial support through weekly groups for 100 caregivers and clubs for 150 youth; and education assistance including homework help for 80 children and school re-enrollment. Our experience and partnerships ensure effectiveness.
This project will prevent treatment interruption for 100 HIV-positive children, maintaining Botswana's progress toward ending AIDS by 2030. Educational support will keep 80 children in school, breaking poverty cycles. Economic strengthening enables 50 families to meet basic needs independently. This emergency support provides stability while HwwB secures long-term funding, ensuring 300 children don't fall through cracks and demonstrating community resilience.
