Disability Management Skills

Greeting from Margadarshi!

An interactive workshop about Disability Management Skills (DMS) and Advanced Therapy Skills

for children with disabilities and their parents, was organised in the month of July 2025. 34 children and their parents participated in this program. The DMS program focused on equipping caregivers with practical tools and strategies for effective disability management, fostering independence, and improving quality of life of children with disability. Complementing this, the Advanced Therapy Skills program offers parents hands-on training in advanced therapeutic techniques to support their child’s development, enhance daily functioning, and maximize their potential. Together, these programs create a comprehensive framework for promoting inclusion, capability, and resilience.

The DMS program focused on equipping caregivers with practical tools and strategies for effective disability management, fostering independence, and improving quality of life of children with disability. Following training were imparted:

How to do therapy in a right way
How to take care of children with cerebral palsy, proper method of seating, feeding and nutritional food, such as, vegetables, greens and fruits, to be given to these children.
The children to use the customised assistive devices every day at least for minimum 2-3 hours and also the benefit of making the child stand in the standing frame.
The method of providing physiotherapy, to follow up therapy at home as well as in therapy centre and they should see the child’s face while doing therapy. Also briefed through video pictures how the parents can do physiotherapy by using locally available materials or the materials available at their home. Communication techniques to be used while talking to the children was also taught to the parents.

These skills are essential for the holistic development and independence of children with disabilities. The sessions also included targeted exercises to improve motor skills and physical abilities, and techniques for toileting to promote personal hygiene and autonomy. Additionally, the program emphasized daily living activities, equipping parents with tools to help their children manage routine tasks and foster self-reliance. This comprehensive approach ensured that participants left with valuable knowledge and skills to improve the quality of life and overall well-being of their children.

Sushmitha's Journey to Empowerment and Achievement

Greetings from Margadarshi The Association For Physically Challenged!!

You have been with us, since 2015, that is, from the start of Margadarshi & GlobalGiving united endeavour in creating a fund for the residential support for the women with disabilities. We have achieved our goal, only with your support, of raising USD 47,707. Now we are moving to our another Project, Therapy support to prevent secondary disability. We request you humbly to extend your support to this Project as well. Kindly remember us in the forthcoming Giving Tuesday, on 3^rd December, incidentally The International Day of People with disAbility.

We are very happy to bring before you the achievement of Sushmitha, one of the 100 beneficiaries, whom you supported.

Sushmitha hails from a rural place in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka, India. She is now 20 years and lives with her parents and brother. When Sushmitha was studying 6^th standard, her sight started deteriorating leading to partial blindness.

Before the intervention of the Margadarshi Association, i,e, in the year 2017, when she was in 9^th standard, Sushmitha encountered significant barriers in her educational journey. Her disability resulted in an inferiority complex, adversely affecting her social interactions and academic performance. Her parents, apprehensive about societal perceptions and her future, were initially reluctant to acknowledge her condition. This lack of support compounded her difficulties, making it challenging for her to excel in a conventional educational setting.

Sushmitha’s life underwent a significant transformation when the Margadarshi engaged with her during her 9^th standard i.e., in the year 2017. They provided vital information about resources and educational facilities tailored for students with disabilities. With our support, Sushmitha obtained a medical certificate and began participating actively in all the activities. Additionally, her teachers were informed of her condition and made accommodations, such as seating her at the front of the classroom, enhancing her ability to engage with the material.

She had put hard efforts which culminated in her achieving an impressive score of 536 out of 625 (85.76%) in her 10^th standard board examinations, a testament to her diligence and dedication. She scored an outstanding 96% in her 12^th std, which boosted her energies to pursue her education to higher levels. Her excellence persisted when she joined Engineering in the year 2022. She consistently performed well in each semester. Sushmitha achieved a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) of 8.5 in her 4 semesters, she is presently pursuing III-year BE (5^th Sem).

The Intervention by Margadarshi not only transformed Sushmitha’s life but also profoundly impacted her family and community. Her journey has inspired many within her community, fostering a culture of support and encouragement for students with disabilities. Sushmitha’s goal is to secure a good job and stand on her own in addition to take care of her parents.

Sushmitha’s says that “I want to illuminate the path for others facing similar challenges, since with the right support, dreams can indeed become a reality”.
